Poland has been the subject of significant interest as well as investment by some of the global cloud providers. Both Microsoft and Google have created data centres in the Central Eastern European country. This has happened in tandem with the growth of tech talent in the country, many of whom work as cloud engineers. But today we will look into how many cloud data centre are there in Poland.
According to Amazon a data centre is a “physical location that stores computing machines and their related hardware equipment. It contains the computing infrastructure that IT systems require, such as servers, data storage drives, and network equipment. It is the physical facility that stores any company’s digital data.”
With the emergence of cloud computing, third-party companies like Google, Amazon or Microsoft manage and maintain data centres. They also offer infrastructure as a service to other organizations.
What Data Centres are already present in Poland?
In Poland both Microsoft and Google have invested heavily into building data centres. Other companies such as Equinix, Atman, Comarch and Beyond.pl also have centres in Poland. These centres service much of the ‘retail market’ today. Others, who service the wholesale market, include companies like EdgeConneX, Vantage Data Centers, and Data4.

It is partially due to the demand in Poland’s capital city, coupled with massive competition between individual data centres.
A reason for some of the data centres being located outside of the capital city is partially due to the need for companies, especially financial institutions, to provide access to an alternative data centre located at least 20 kilometres from the main data centre. With the backdrop of war in the Ukraine the importance of this back-up location has risen.
Who are the people that Data Centres are looking for in Poland today?

Over the years it has proved harder for data centres to find the right candidates for open roles. This is both due to the rapid rise of popularity of data storage solutions as well as the changing employee landscape. The other consideration is how data centres need to be “always-on”. In one report it is suggested that from 2019 to 2025 there will be a need for a further 300,000 data centre professionals just to keep up with demand.

Just this week Atman received 1.35 billion Polish zloties to construct a new data center campus near Warsaw.

The project is particularly significant as the company has received the funding from six financial institutions including ING Bank, mBank, Pekao and others, all banks. In addition to the standard financial requirements, the agreement with the banks places emphasis on energy efficiency and corporate sustainability or ESG in all areas.
The new center will house more than 50,000 servers in 3 buildings and is planned to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2024.
